Consider for a moment a bacterium.
Actually, people rarely consider a bacterium. Rather, they think of a whole lot of bacteria. When they talk about bacteria growing, they do not talk about one bacterium getting bigger, instead they mean that the bacteria are multiplying - that the number of bacteria is increasing.
